This elegant, handcrafted wine cabinet is a fine example of bespoke cabinetry from Michael Joseph Furniture. Designed, built, and fitted entirely by hand, this piece is tailored to maximise both style and functionality within a dedicated wine and glassware storage area. The result is a perfectly balanced blend of craftsmanship, practical storage, and timeless design.

Created for a private home, the cabinet was built to seamlessly fit within a designated alcove space. At its heart is a desire to celebrate the natural beauty of solid oak while also providing a custom solution for wine storage and entertaining. The top is made from Cat’s Paw Pippy Oak, a highly distinctive timber known for its beautiful clusters of burrs and characterful grain patterning. Its naturally rich figuring and subtle imperfections add depth, texture, and a truly unique appearance that no manufactured material could replicate.

As with all of our projects, this cabinet was designed through close consultation with the client. The brief was clear: create a functional wine and glassware station that would serve as both a practical piece of furniture and a standout feature within the room. The finished result combines clean lines, deep navy cabinetry, and warm natural oak accents — a combination that delivers a modern yet classically grounded aesthetic.

Design Features

The cabinetry is framed with solid oak trim, subtly chamfered to soften the edges and highlight the timber’s natural tone against the painted panels. All cabinets and wine racks were constructed using traditional joinery methods, ensuring longevity and robust usability.

The left and right towers provide extensive bottle storage in two complementary formats. The left side features a combination of grid-style racking for individual bottles and a cross-divided X-frame section to accommodate mixed case sizes or open bottle storage. The right tower provides matching symmetry with a grid-style rack above and open shelving below, ideal for stemware or taller bottles.

The lower cabinets offer generous hidden storage for accessories, barware, or anything else the client wishes to keep neatly out of sight. Internally, the cabinetry is finished to the same exacting standard as the exterior, demonstrating our consistent attention to detail.

Materials & Finish

The cabinet doors and framework are constructed from high-grade solid oak, paired with high-quality birch ply internals. The painted finish is a deep, rich navy that contrasts beautifully with the oak, while the brushed brass handles add a touch of modern sophistication.

The standout feature remains the Cat’s Paw Pippy Oak top. Carefully selected and bookmatched, this timber brings an abundance of character with its natural burrs and subtle knots. The surface has been sanded, oiled, and finished by hand to enhance its natural warmth and depth, while also providing a practical, durable worktop.

Made to Measure

Every aspect of this piece was made to measure — from the height and width of each wine rack to the depth of the cabinets and the overhang of the solid oak top. The wall it sits against includes a slight taper and a natural stone return on the left-hand side, so the cabinetry had to be templated with precision and scribed in seamlessly on site.

Fitting was carried out by our team with meticulous care, ensuring every element aligned perfectly. As with all Michael Joseph Furniture installations, the piece was brought to site in sections and installed by hand without compromise.
