This handcrafted shaker-style wardrobe was created as a fully bespoke piece, tailored to fit the dimensions of a bedroom alcove while providing the client with a practical and elegant storage solution. Built entirely in-house by the team at Michael Joseph Furniture, this piece showcases our commitment to detail, precision, and traditional joinery — all delivered with a contemporary finish.

Designed with usability and timeless style in mind, the wardrobe features a balanced layout of cupboard space, drawer storage, and open shelving. The result is a piece that blends beautifully into the room while offering a generous amount of storage that feels both structured and accessible.

Design & Layout

The layout of the wardrobe was developed with input from the client to ensure every inch of space was maximised. Three full-height shaker-style doors sit at the centre, opening to reveal hanging space for garments. Beneath, a set of four drawers provide accessible storage for folded clothing, accessories, or everyday items. To the side, a tall column of open shelving allows for the display of books, ornaments, or storage baskets — giving the piece a lighter feel and additional function.

Each element of the layout was planned with care, taking into account the surrounding architecture, the client’s lifestyle, and the proportions of the room itself. The shaker detailing on the doors and drawer fronts adds depth and structure to the piece, while the clean lines and smooth finish lend it a more contemporary feel.

Construction & Craftsmanship

The wardrobe was crafted using a combination of high-grade MDF and birch ply, ensuring long-term durability with the ability to achieve a flawless painted finish. All doors and drawers are traditionally framed, constructed by hand, and fitted with soft-close mechanisms as standard.

As seen in the pre-installation image, every part of the build is handled in our workshop with the same level of detail and care — from drawer carcasses to outer panels. Drawers are dovetailed and built to last, providing strength without compromising on aesthetics. The open shelving unit was scribed to fit flush against the adjoining wall and ceiling, ensuring a clean, built-in appearance with no awkward gaps or infills.

Finish & Colour

Once constructed, the entire piece was hand-painted on site in a beautifully deep grey-blue tone chosen by the client to complement the bedroom’s palette. The paint has a smooth satin sheen that’s easy to clean and reflects light subtly, enhancing the piece’s refined appearance.

Brushed brass handles and knobs were chosen to contrast against the darker cabinetry — offering a warm, sophisticated finish that adds to the overall elegance of the design. The result is a wardrobe that feels modern yet rooted in traditional design values.

Tailored to the Space

As with all Michael Joseph Furniture pieces, this wardrobe was made to measure. The ceiling height and floor levels were carefully surveyed to ensure a perfect fit, particularly where the unit met the room’s return wall and coving. Once delivered in sections, the wardrobe was installed entirely by hand by our skilled fitting team.

By keeping everything in-house — from initial sketches to final paintwork — we can maintain complete control over the quality and finish of every project. This means the client receives a piece of fitted furniture that not only meets their storage needs but also enhances the room it sits within.
